Family Orienteering Day
April 17, 2010 DOWNLOAD THE BROCHURE! (Click here)
The Agua Caliente Elementary School and Tanque Verde Elementary School Parent Teacher Groups are again sponsoring an orienteering competition on the Agua Caliente Elementary School campus. This event, organized by Ron and Linda Fox, consists of three courses with varying degrees of difficulty. Families compete against time to find hidden waypoints using maps and orienteering skills. Ron Fox will provide a short course in compass reading for those participants unfamiliar with orienteering, and a breakfast will be provided for all by Tony Terry (Little Anthony’s Diner and Grandma Tony’s Pizza). A raffle for donated prizes will be held at the end of the competition. All proceeds from the orienteering entry fees and the raffle will go to provide scholarships for Tanque Verde students interested in outdoor courses and wilderness trips through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
The course is open for sign-up from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. the morning of April 17th at the Agua Caliente Elementary School, 11420 E. Limberlost Road in northeast Tucson. The course closes at 11 a.m. For information, contact Ron or Linda Fox at ROUTEONESOCCER@aol.com or pick up an application at Agua Caliente or Tanque Verde Elementary Schools.
Thanks goes out to the participating families, the PTG’s, Agua Caliente Elementary School, and the businesses and individuals who donated items for the raffle.
Special thanks to Ron and Linda Fox for creating this event and for the many hours spent planning and organizing, and to Tony Terry for donating all of the food, beverages, and kitchen staff for the breakfast.
Kristen Yoder Memorial 5K Run
April 11, 2008 -- Sabino High School –5000 N. Bowes Road, Tucson, Arizona
The Southern Arizona Distance Track Classic Race has been cancelled for this year (2008) due an insufficient number of teams committed to the race. Since the meet is cancelled, the Kristen Yoder Memorial 5K Run also will not be held this year. Hopefully by next spring (2009) this can be resumed.
Outdoor Equipment Sale
Sunday April 15, 2007 -- Flagstaff, Arizona
The Outdoor Equipment Sale was a huge success, with all the funds going to benefit the Yoder Outdoor Leader Scholarship established by the faculty in the Parks and Recreation Management Program at Northern Arizona University. The sale raised enough money to allow the NAU Foundation to reach its threshold to fully endow their scholarship.
Thanks goes out to all the Foundation Board members and the friends of Dustin and Kristen who helped with the sale.
Special thanks to Steve Chatinsky at Peace Surplus for his very generous donations of personnel, facility, outdoor equipment, and clothing for the sale. Also special thanks to Jo Ann Williams at Century 21 Realty for the use of her parking lot for the sale.
The Great Divide Ride
Summer 2007
Jon Pierson, the recipient of the first Foundation scholarship at Northern Arizona University, rode his mountain bike from Mexico up to Canada along the continental divide, 2700 miles over two and a half months. Before leaving he decided to dedicate his ride to the Foundation and solicited pledges for each mile ridden. The ride was a huge success and he arrived safely in Canada at the end of July. His ride was featured in the Flagstaff paper, The Arizona Daily Sun, and he will be giving talks on the trip this fall at NAU. Congratulations Jon, welcome back, and thanks for the help with the Foundation. Jon’s ride is chronicled in his blog, http://jonpierson.wordpress.com/, which contains lots of good pictures along with the running commentary.
